Game of Thrones Extract
The whole concept of Gender is contrasted from realism and stereotypical views of what builds males and females. Conflict is created within the male genre because, stereotypically, men are seen as more dominant and at ease with one another, but in the extract men (the slaves) have been put down to begin worth hardly nothing by other men trying to expand their pride. This could link in with Binary oppositions being active in only the male gender - Rich vs Poor or even Power vs Vulnerable - showing that the way men are constructed create a corrupt civil war within the gender.
The woman in the extract is directly shown as very powerful because the setting of the actual scene and where each person/people are positioned. We see Daenerys and the master of slaves make a deal. When they talk (before Daenerys claims control of the slaves) a medium close up shots are used and the camera angle is looking down on her and high upon the Master showing that she is in a position where she has no control over the situation and isn't safe at that moment. The piece of dialogue 'is it done?' ,which comes from Daenerys, the camera angles begin to change gradually when she holds the golden whip prop and we see her from a low camera angle looking up towards her throughout the rest of the scene. The use of camera also moves along with the gain of control and thoughts that Daenerys has when talking to the slaves. What i mean by this is that when Daenerys first took power in the scene and addressed the slaves in the Valarian language we looked down on the slaves, but as she gives the slaves the power to become free men the camera angles begin to level with them showing that they have gained their equality with each other.
The uniformity of the slaves tell the audience that men are or should be all the same and that if you're different from that traditional, same group of 'men' then you are not classed as part of that group at all. In addition the mise-on-scene of uniform can also produce the idea that the army of the 'same' men construct one body in which Daenerys (the woman) still needs, or has been waiting to find to complete her power as a leader or just function in general. This once again relates to the stereotype of how men and women are made to fit each other (so heterosexual is the right way) and if that isn't the case gender roles can't be constructed.
The character of Daenerys has been created from different approaches. The director has decided to cast a very beautiful woman, with blonde hair (contrasting the stereotype of blonde girls having no common sense etc), in which a majority of the male audience look forward to when watching Game of Thrones. Daenerys relies on men for protection and to get what she wants and that is shown through her power over the man in armour (possibly her bodyguard) who draws his sword a sign of safety and ready to protect her. This could be linked to love, which is another point of power with women and men are seen as more vulnerable, and it is men who usually have to work for love, not the woman However the audience which has been attracted because of the opposite gender, are brought into a different world where, the men become the less powerful
