Evaluate the role of digital technologies in the marketing and consumption of products in the media area you have studies.

What is marketing in film

Marketing is a very big aspect when it comes to actually getting a film noticed to the target audience. Without marketing the film is unlikely to have any sort of success whether it is critical or commercially. For example if we look at 'The Fate of the Furious', we know that the marketing for that film was massive, partly because the actors in the film are all big and therefore people who follow each of them will be interested in the film franchise which is arguably their biggest selling point also meaning that people who see the latest film will want to see the previous ones before as well, which a benefit of having a franchise. The film is also distributed by one of the big six (universal studios) which immediately gives it a brand image and Universal has the ability to distribute to all audiences including the UK. As a result of this the film has made over 500 million in the opening weekend and is becoming the biggest grossing film ever.

The failure of the 'The Hateful 8' film was a result of small marketing, while being distributed at the same time as 'The Force Awakens'

SECTION B ANSWER STRUCTURE

Paragraph 1 - What is Marketing in film?

- Cross Media Marketing (Press, Radio, Internet, TV, Posters, Synergy)
- Institutions - Distribution Companies- The Big Six (20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Universal, WB, Paramount, Columbia)
- Global distribution - Big Six eventually gain control/own rights to movie - ISSUE - unethical by taking credit and they gain most of money (all about the ££) etc. Films will need the bg six in order to gain as much publicity as possible (even if the film isn't as good they shill need to get money somehow)
- Independent company (smaller companies) have all rights to movie but less likely to profit from creation as it won't be distributed as broadly as it would be with the big six. UK directed films have no issue with rights but have a problem with advertising their film to the audience. Independent companies need to get money from investors who will ll want quite a high percentage back, which when added together can be a massive amount. So companies in the big six will give you a wage and then supply the film with money, but under their control.
